Frequently asked questionsEverything in plain English — no surprises

What is WOW Legends? Is it AzerothCore?
WOW Legends is a fork of AzerothCore — the open-source Wrath of the Lich King (3.3.5a) server — with our own custom modules: per-character XP, instant gear, AI companion chat, and a one-click App. Full credit and thanks to the AzerothCore team and contributors. WOW Legends is released under the same open-source (GPL) license.
Is this a server I can just join and play on?
No — WOW Legends is a repack: server software you download and run yourself. We don't operate a public realm for playing. Our PTR demo realm exists so you can test the repack before installing it — walk around, meet the bots, try the features — but your real home is the world you host, alone or with friends.
What version / expansion is this?
Wrath of the Lich King — 3.3.5a (build 12340). Northrend, Death Knights, the original raids and dungeons — the classic WotLK experience.
What are playerbots? Can I play solo?
Yes — you can solo it like a full MMO. Hundreds of smart bots quest, level, run dungeons and raids, join guilds and fill the world. Group up with them, compete against them, or just enjoy a world that feels alive even when you're the only real player online.
Is WOW Legends free?
Yes — the repack is free, forever. The companion App, your own player portal, hosted-AI credits and 12 months of updates are our thank-you for a one-time 25 € donation that helps fund continued development and hosting — no subscriptions, ever. You never need any of it to play; it just makes running your server effortless.
What do supporters get for the 25 € donation?
Four things, tied to your wow-legends.eu account the minute you donate:
  • The App — auto-installs, configures and manages your server in a few clicks; it auto-activates your hosted-AI key (or points to your own endpoint) and gives every class & race its own personality.
  • A complete player portal for your server — not just signup: web shop, armory, leaderboards, a hardcore hall of fame and an admin panel (live demo).
  • 2,500 hosted-AI credits so your bots can talk out of the box.
  • 12 months of App updates — and every version you receive is yours forever. Another donation later extends the window.
Donate with your account email and it's all automatic. The repack itself always stays free.
How does the AI companion chat work? Does it cost extra?
You choose the brain — bring your own, or use ours with zero setup:
  • Ollama (local or a box you host) — free and private.
  • Your own API key — OpenAI, Anthropic (Claude)… you pay your provider directly.
  • Our hosted AI — no key, no setup: top up credits (100 per €, more in the bigger packs) and your bots run on our fast model. 1 credit = 1 bot reply, credits never expire.
The bring-your-own routes always stay open — the hosted option is pure convenience, available to free users and supporters alike.

What actually costs a credit: only when a bot answers you — whispers, party/raid & guild chat, and proximity replies near you. The bots' unprompted world chatter (general/say) is free — fixed lines from the database — so a busy, lively world costs nothing; you only spend when you talk with the AI. Full setup & every setting: the AI Chat guide.

The bots barely chat in general / world chat — is that normal?
Yes, by design. The lines bots drop on their own as they roam are fixed messages from the database, kept light on purpose so a lively world never burns AI credits. The real AI kicks in the moment you interact — whisper a bot, talk in party or guild, or when a bot pipes up after you /say something nearby. Want a chattier open world? Raise the proximity chat chance in mod_wowlegends.conf (or the App's AI settings) — higher means bots speak to nearby players more often (that uses credits); the free background chatter keeps going regardless.
Can I try it without installing anything? (PTR)
Yes — our PTR is a public demo realm, free for everyone. Create a game account, point a 3.3.5a client at it, and walk through a world full of bots, companions and hardcore heroes. It's the exact experience your own server gets, running live.
How is WOW Legends different from plain AzerothCore?
Same rock-solid core, plus our extras: custom modules (per-character XP, instant .gear, AI companion chat), curated playerbot setup, a complete searchable command reference, and the one-click App that removes all the manual setup. You get the AzerothCore foundation with the rough edges smoothed off.
Is it hard to set up?
Two paths. The free route is the classic manual setup — download the pieces, set up the database, extract game data, edit configs (we provide a guide). The App does all of that for you in a few clicks. Same server either way; the App just saves you the work.
Can I customize it — rates, bots, content?
Completely. Built on AzerothCore (open source): tune XP/drop/gold rates, set how many bots populate the world, edit the world itself — every config and the whole world database is yours to edit. Per-character XP and instant gear are built in. It's your server.
How do I control the bots and use GM tools?
Two ways. Everything is a few in-game commands away — bot management and the full GM toolset live in the 800+ command set. Or make it all point-and-click with our two free in-game addons, out now: a GM addon for full GM control, and a player addon for bot & companion control — build a party, gear, group and manage from a panel, no console needed. The player addon is free for your whole playerbase too.
Is there a hardcore mode?
Yes. Hardcore means permanent death — when a hardcore character dies, it becomes a fallen hero: kept on your account but locked, no second chances. You control it two ways:
  • Realm-wide — the owner forces hardcore for every character (one config switch).
  • Opt-in — leave it off, and at level 1 a player opts in: type .hardcore on, or talk to the Herald of the Fallen in their starting zone for an "are you sure?" prompt (permanent once set).
And for settling scores: Mak'gora — two hardcore players can both .makgora to agree to a duel to the death; the loser falls. Normal duels are never lethal.
Does it run on Linux?
No — our repack and App are Windows-only. If you're on Linux, use the official AzerothCore project directly, which fully supports Linux.
What are the hardware requirements?
It runs comfortably on a normal modern PC — the biggest factor is how many bots you run. 8 GB RAM handles a solo world, 16 GB a busy one; every figure is a config dial, not a wall. Full breakdown with server profiles: System Requirements.
Do I need the World of Warcraft client?
Yes — a 3.3.5a (build 12340) client (the same version most WotLK servers use, such as the freely-available ChromieCraft client). We don't distribute Blizzard's game client; you supply your own and point its realmlist at your server.
Does my PC need to stay on for others to join?
Yes — the server runs on your machine, so for friends to connect it needs to be on and reachable (port-forwarded or behind a proxy like Cloudflare for the web). Playing solo on your own PC needs nothing extra.
Will my characters survive updates?
Yes — your database (accounts, characters, progress) carries across updates; the core applies schema migrations automatically. As with any server, back up your database before updating, just to be safe. The App handles updates for you.
What if WOW Legends shuts down one day — do I lose my server and the App?
Short version: we have no plans to shut down. WOW Legends is a passion project we intend to keep running and improving for years to come. But you're trusting us with your world, so here's our promise for the worst case anyway.

Your free repack and your server already live entirely on your own PC — nothing we do could ever take those away. The only two pieces that lean on our servers are the App and your player portal. If the day ever came that we had to wind the project down, we'd release both so they keep working without us — free and self-hostable — so nothing you've built simply vanishes. Your bots keep talking too: the AI already runs on your own Ollama or API key, no hosted service required.

To be clear, this isn't on the horizon — it's just the safety net. A server you pour your evenings into deserves one.

Can I run a public server for my friends or community?
Absolutely — it's your server, your rules. WOW Legends is the repack; what you do with it is up to you.
Is it pay-to-win?
No. Donations buy convenience — the App, your own player website, hosted-AI credits — never in-game power. The repack is identical for everyone, and the demo PTR is free for all.
How do I get help or report a bug?
